I agree that The Eternal Return and Deflorate were adjustment albums. Even further, The Eternal Return was the last Victory record for Darkest Hour and the band has even said they just kinda shit that one out. It did have some good tracks, though. And, as far as The Black Dahlia Murder are concerned, Ritual is stellar, but I wouldn't knock Deflorate completely.

Post-adjustment or not, I just can't dig The Human Romance that much. Trust me, I've tried. The riffs are great and it's some of Ryan Parrish's best work yet, but it just doesn't do it for me.

The Human Romance was amazing, I dunno what you're talking about. It's a huge step up from The Eternal Return, which was a let down for me.

There's nothing wrong with clean vocals at all. I actually think maybe some bands have a hard time after they lose a member and replace them. For example, The Eternal Return was their first album after losing Kris Norris, and it was a let down for me. Another example, Deflorate by The Black Dahlia Murder was their first record with their new lead guitarist, and it is by far my least favorite of thier albums. Ritual (their new album) is awesome, just like The Human Romance, because both bands had some time to adjust and figure out what works with the new line-up.

Hey Steff. First, thanks for checking out my blog. I'm a faithful reader of yours. I'm a working father of two, so mine is an unfortunately oft-ignored hobby, but I really appreciate your comment. Christian metal really fueled my obsession with genre for a long time and opened my eyes to a shitload of sub-genres I didn't know existed before then. Glad you liked Zao. They were (and sort of still are, but have taken a turn for the worse with their past couple releases) phenomenal. Blood and Fire is still one of my favorite metal albums of all time.

OK, Zao are awesome. You've converted me :)

I used to sort of be a Christian, too, but that fell by the wayside around the time I started getting REALLY serious about music. Mostly because I hung out with a lot of pentecostals and they tended to frown upon my Catholic ways of doing things, and I'd get mad because people seemed so down on Catholics and I actually LOVED the services and the rituals and the paganness of it all, and I didn't want to be part of any group that wanted to tell me how I could and couldn't worship, so I stopped calling myself a Christian, and over the years my beliefs changed to match.

When I was writing about Christian metal on my blog, Mortification were the only Christian metal band I actually liked. I find the lyrics - especially with the clean vocals - can be so distracting. A lot of people talk up Antestor as a "grymm" option, but I heard one album and thought it was HORRID. The worst mediocre black metal. But then, all my readers started suggesting bands, and I got heavily into groups like Living Sacrifice. And now you've introduced me to Zao, so thanks!

Great interview, having grown up just down the street from him I can honestly tell you he is in fact cooler than you think and is the real deal. I remember his humble beginnings with music and metal and to see what he is doing now is nothing short of amazing. I saw Averse in Topeka and they blew my mind. Thanks for giving the rest of world a glimpse of a person I respect so much.

Not a problem at all, Tom. I really dug what I heard. I posted a message on your Facebook wall in response to you posting my blog. I put my e-mail address in the text. I'm working on rehashing this blog to focus mainly on metal, so get ahold of me. I'd definitely like to cover you guys further. Thanks again.

Wow! Firstly thank you for the kind words. I do vocals in Befallen (doom) We've been on hiatus lately because we have been recording. New stuff due out in late April. We're recording with Bill Korecki (Incantation, mushroomhead, etc) We've definitely expanded so much and have improved since our first demo. If you have us on facebook then please send me a message and I will gladly send you a copy of the new stuff. We havent been checking the myspace so often anymore. Once again thank you. It is very much appreciated and I myself am very happy that you enjoy the music

Befallen (black), being an australian band will obviously start off slowly because there isn't much of a fan base in Perth where they live.
At the moment there best (and pretty much only) way of advertisement is word of mouth.
So if you're a fan of Befallen (black) then you should hit the streets and yell it from the rooftops. Alternatively, you can link their Myspace page every chance you get.
I am currently awaiting a copy of their demo from their drummer who is just 16 years of age.
All being quite young, I wish these men decades of great music ahead of them.
